Do Children See Spirit? | Children & Spirits Explained
I’m often asked whether children can see spirits—or what many people call ghosts.
The short answer is yes. I personally prefer the word spirit rather than ghost, as the word ghost often brings up fearful or misleading imagery. Spirit, instead, reflects energy, connection, and consciousness beyond the physical world.
Why Are Children More Open to Spirit?
Young children tend to see, feel, and sense spirit far more easily than adults. This is because:
Their belief systems are still forming
They haven’t been conditioned by fear or limitation
They haven’t yet been told that spirit “doesn’t exist”
They trust what they feel and sense naturally
Children haven’t learned to doubt their experiences yet. Their intuition is open, innocent, and unfiltered.
Loved Ones in Spirit & Children
I have no doubt that our loved ones in spirit watch over us. Children are often visited by relatives in spirit—especially grandparents—who come through with love, comfort, and protection.
Children are open receivers of this energy because they:
Are new to life
Carry joy, curiosity, and openness
Naturally exist in the present moment
Spirit is drawn to this openness.
Angels, Spirit Guides & Earthbound Spirits
Children can also be receptive to:
Angels
Spirit guides
Earthbound spirits (souls who have passed but haven’t yet crossed into the light)
This doesn’t mean something is wrong or unsafe. Earthbound spirits are not inherently negative—they are often confused and simply need help moving on.
When Children Feel Afraid
Even loving spirits can sometimes frighten children—especially if the child doesn’t understand what they’re experiencing.
If your child feels scared:
Reassure them that they are safe
Let them know they are allowed to speak up
Teach them they can ask spirit to leave if they feel uncomfortable
Children (and adults) have the power to only welcome loving, high‑vibrational energy into their space.
Fear fades when understanding grows.
Teaching Children About Spirit With Love
When we remove fear and approach spirit with compassion, children feel empowered instead of overwhelmed. Understanding helps children feel protected rather than confused.
One beautiful resource for helping children understand spirit is:
📘 Sophia & The Spirits by Lynne from Angelspeak
This book gently explains spirit in a way that helps children feel safe, supported, and confident in their experiences.
“Sophia and the Spirits is a fun way to teach children about the different realities around us and helps children who can see and communicate with spirit feel empowered.”
Final Thoughts on Children & Spirit
Spirit doesn’t come from a place of fear—it comes from love, guidance, and protection.
When children understand this, they can experience comfort instead of anxiety.
I know from personal experience that my daughters often speak with loved ones in spirit and find reassurance in knowing they are never alone.
✨ Have you or your child experienced spirit?
I’d love to hear your story.
