Top Tips for Protecting Your Energy in Daily Life
“I release what isn’t mine and return to myself.”
Have you ever walked into a room and immediately felt uncomfortable, heavy or unsettled — even though nothing obvious has happened?
Or perhaps you've spent time with someone and afterwards felt completely drained, emotionally exhausted or like you need some time alone to recharge.
If you’re naturally sensitive, empathic or clairsentient, you may notice the emotions, moods and atmosphere around you more deeply than others.
Sometimes we can take on more than we realise.
This is where energy protection and energetic boundaries can become a helpful part of your self-care practice.
Energy protection isn’t about living in fear of other people or avoiding the world around you. It’s about becoming more aware of what you’re feeling, learning to recognise what feels like yours and what may have been picked up from your environment, and finding ways to come back to yourself.
What Is Energy Protection?
Energy protection is a spiritual practice used by many people to help them feel more grounded, centred and energetically clear.
It can include visualisation, grounding, crystals, sound, water, intention and — perhaps most importantly — healthy personal boundaries.
You don’t have to do every practice. The key is finding what feels supportive for you.
Signs You Might Need to Reset Your Energy
You may benefit from taking some time to ground and reset if you notice things such as:
Feeling emotionally overwhelmed after being around certain people
Feeling unusually tired after busy or social environments
Taking on other people's moods or emotions
Feeling unsettled when entering certain spaces
Struggling to switch off after a stressful day
Feeling like you need quiet time alone to recharge
These experiences don't necessarily mean anything is wrong. Sometimes your nervous system simply needs a chance to slow down and reset.
8 Simple Ways to Protect and Reset Your Energy
1. Visualise a Protective Light
Before entering a busy environment or spending time around people who you know can be emotionally draining, take a moment to pause.
Close your eyes and imagine a soft light surrounding your body.
You might visualise it as white, golden or any colour that feels comforting to you.
Imagine yourself surrounded by a calm, supportive space and set an intention such as:
“I am grounded, protected and connected to my own energy.”
You can also use this practice when you arrive home at the end of the day.
2. Ground Yourself
Grounding is one of the simplest ways to reconnect with yourself.
Stand barefoot on grass, sand or soil if you can. Take a few slow breaths and bring your attention back to your body.
Imagine roots extending from your feet into the earth, helping you feel steady and supported.
You don't have to spend a long time doing this. Even a few quiet minutes can become a beautiful daily ritual.
3. Wear or Carry Protective Crystals
If crystals are part of your spiritual practice, they can be wonderful energetic allies.
Some crystals people commonly choose for grounding and energetic protection include:
Black Tourmaline — often used for grounding and energetic protection.
Smoky Quartz — associated with grounding, calm and releasing what no longer serves you.
Hematite — commonly used as a grounding stone.
Red Jasper — often associated with stability, strength and the root chakra.
You can wear crystals as jewellery, carry one in your pocket or bag, or keep one close to you throughout the day.
You can also place crystals around your home as part of your own energetic practice.
4. Create Protection at Your Front Door
Your front door can become a beautiful symbolic point of transition between the outside world and your home.
Try placing Selenite and Black Tourmaline near your front door.
Selenite is often used in spiritual practices for cleansing and creating a clear, peaceful energy, while Black Tourmaline is commonly associated with grounding and protection.
You could set an intention for your home as you place them there:
“Only peaceful, loving and supportive energy enters this home.”
It can become a simple reminder that your home is your safe and restorative space.
5. Use an Energy Mist Before You Enter Your Home
This is one of my favourite simple rituals.
If you've had a busy day, been around lots of people or feel like you've picked up a lot of energy, spray an energy-clearing mist around yourself before you walk inside your home.
Take a breath, spray the mist around your body and imagine leaving the day behind you.
You might say:
“I release what isn't mine. I leave the energy of the day outside and return home feeling clear, grounded and peaceful.”
Then walk inside and allow yourself to transition into your home environment.
You can also keep an energy mist in your car or handbag for a quick reset throughout the day.
6. Use Water as a Reset
There is something incredibly comforting about water when you've had a long or emotionally intense day.
A shower, bath, swim or even washing your hands mindfully can become an opportunity to reset.
As the water runs over you, imagine the heaviness of the day being released.
For a relaxing bath, you can add Epsom salts or sea salt if that's suitable for you.
You could also add a few drops of a suitable essential oil, following the product's safety directions.
As you soak, take a few deep breaths and imagine yourself becoming lighter and more settled.
7. Clear Your Space With Sound
Sound can be a lovely way to shift the atmosphere of a room.
You could use:
Bells
Chimes
Singing bowls
Clapping
Music
Your own voice
Walk around your home with the intention of creating a fresh, peaceful atmosphere.
You don't need anything elaborate. Sometimes simply opening the windows, playing music and intentionally resetting the space can make a noticeable difference to how a room feels.
8. Remember That Boundaries Are Energy Protection Too
This is one of the most important ones.
Protecting your energy isn't only about visualising lights or carrying crystals.
Sometimes protecting your energy looks like:
Saying no.
Taking a break.
Leaving a conversation.
Not explaining yourself repeatedly.
Choosing who you spend your time with.
Allowing someone else to have their emotions without making them yours.
You can care deeply about people without carrying everything they are experiencing.
Healthy boundaries can be one of the most powerful ways of looking after yourself.
A Simple Daily Energy Protection Practice
You don't need a complicated ritual.
Before you start your day, take a few moments to pause.
Take three slow breaths.
Place your feet firmly on the ground and imagine yourself surrounded by a calm, protective light.
Then say:
“I am grounded in my own energy. I release what isn't mine. I move through my day with clarity, protection and peace.”
At the end of the day, you can repeat the process and imagine releasing anything you've carried home with you.
You could also make your front-door ritual part of your daily routine:
✨ Spray your energy mist before entering your home.
✨ Take a deep breath and consciously leave the day behind.
✨ Step inside and allow yourself to settle.
✨ Let your Selenite and Black Tourmaline at the door become a reminder that your home is a place to restore and recharge.
Remember — You Don't Have to Be Afraid of Your Sensitivity
Being sensitive to people and environments doesn't mean you need to be constantly protecting yourself from the world.
Your sensitivity can also be a beautiful gift.
The goal isn't to shut yourself down or become disconnected from others. It's learning how to stay connected to yourself while still being open to the world around you.
You can be compassionate without absorbing everything.
You can be intuitive without carrying everything you sense.
And you can care about others while still protecting your own space.
Your energy is precious.
Take time to come back to yourself, listen to what you need and create practices that help you feel grounded, clear and supported.
